CFU and PCF sponsoring financial training

The Community Foundation of Utah, the Park City Foundation, UNA are sponsoring a series of training for nonprofits, all held in Park City

The seminars, as well as the underwriting of nonprofit organizational endowments through the Community Foundation of Utah, are made possible through the generous support of GE Capital Financial and the Utah Association of Financial Services.

The first seminar on is free and will take place Wednesday, March 10, from 8:45 to 11 a.m. in room 201 at the Park City Library. The topic is strategic planning and why, in times of uncertainty, it's more important than ever. Presented by Fraser Nelson, director of the Community Foundation of Utah.

The three remaining seminars will be held on the second Tuesday in April, May and June from 9 to 11 a.m. at the Park City Library. Nonprofits may sign up for seminars a la carte or package all three together. The cost is $25 for all three seminars for one person, $40 for all three seminars for two people, or $10 per person per class.

  • The April 14 seminar will cover cash, controls and consistency. Participants will learn how to manage an agency's books, build savings, and better understand its finances. Instructor Elizabeth Nielson will lead discussions about cash flow cycles, planning, and forecasting. Beyond basic bookkeeping, the seminar will also cover financial controls, analysis and reporting, and how to build and maintain operating reserves.
  • The seminar on May 12, "Securing Support through Fiscal Sustainability," will continue the discussion on operating reserves and address the issue of how to balance the immediacy of an agency's mission with a strategic and sustainable approach to budgets. Phyllis Hockett will moderate a discussion with local foundation leaders and then provide a nuts-and-bolts approach to annual fundraising.
  • The final seminar on June 9 will focus on the ultimate goal for nonprofits: endowments. Participants will learn the fundamentals of building, managing and fundraising for a steady source of funding. Fraser Nelson will return to share valuable insight and PCF Executive Director Trisha Worthington will recount her experiences leading a $60 million capital and endowment campaign for the U.S. Ski and Snowboard Foundation.
