Giving improved but weak in 2009 (Philanthropy Digest)

Here is a sumary of a new survey from Philanthropy Digest

"Fundraising results for 2009 are expected to be better than 2008, although still lackluster, but charities are a bit more optimistic about 2010, a new study says.

About 40 percent of nonprofits estimate they raised less money in 2009 than 2008, while the same number expect better results and 20 percent expect fundraising to be flat, says a survey by the Association for Fundraising Professionals.

But almost six in 10 nonprofits say they anticipate raising more in 2010 than they did this year, while only seven percent believe fundraising totals will go down this year.

"Despite the improvement in the fundraising environment from 2008, this year has been difficult and challenging for most charities," Paulette V. Maehara, president and CEO of the association, says in a statement. "However, we are seeing slow increases in giving over the course of this year, especially during the past six months."

Final fundraising numbers for the year are likely to depend on giving totals for October through December, the time period during which almost half of charities receive 30 percent to 60 percent of their contributions.
